When we, Andrew and Candise Davis, decided to raise a few chickens to provide our own family's table with better quality meat, we never imagined how quickly it would snowball into a fully realized business.
2014
Soon after acquiring our fist flock of 50 birds other family members inquired if we would be willing to raise birds for them as well. After calculating out the cost we agreed and started to prepare to house and feed a larger flock.
2015
The next year we raised 100 birds for ourselves and our family members. Once again more family members, and friends as well this time, asked if we would be willing to add a few more birds to our next flock for them. We were being given the chance to help provide the people we cared about with healthy high quality food so, with out hesitating, we agreed to increase our flock.
2016
In 2016 we decided to split our flock in two, 100 birds in the spring and 100 birds in the fall. This allowed us to provide all of our friends and family with the meat they needed while not overwhelming our day to day lives as we both worked full time jobs outside of our home. All of our birds were quickly spoken for. After that, friends of family member, friends of friends, and complete strangers were inquiring when our next flock would be and could they place an order. We realized the demand for naturally raised meat was higher than we ever imagined and that it was time to make our quickly growing "hobby" really work for our family.
2017
In March of 2017 Primrose Poultry was officially established and the infrastructure building began. Up to this point we had been using home built, by Andrew, processing equipment. While it had worked for us in passed years it was never meant to handle the 450 birds we planned on having this year. The industrial equipment we purchased included a plucker, scalder, chamber vacuum sealer, and all new feeders and waterers. We also built a butcher shop on property that included a walk-in cooler.
2018
This year our flocks grew again due to demand bringing our yearly count to 600 birds. After years of trial and error, new housing designs were in the works as well as time management initiatives. This year also brought us to the Richfield Springs Farmers Market where our customer base grew.
2019
2019 brought the purchase of a lumber mill and mini excavator along with the harvesting of local downed trees to bring our housing dreams to life. Each 10'x10' fully insulated house contains thermostat-controlled heating lamps and cooling fans. All of this work was completed by the two of us along with our two teenage sons. This year's flock numbers increased to 750.
2020
This year our customer base included 105 families, and we raised and processed a whopping 1000 birds. We also started to install solar panels on the tops of our chicken houses. It is our goal to eliminate our farm's carbon footprint.
2021 & 2022
Both 2021 and 2022 were relatively quiet for us. Our systems were working flawlessly, and our flocks' numbers were maxed out both years. During these years we did upgrade our heating systems to include thermostat-controlled propane heaters for backup when the power would inevitably go out due to storms.
2023
Our line of dog treats, Primrose Poultry for Pooches, was added to our offerings this year. We worked with Cornell Food Lab to make sure that our dog treats were the absolute best quality we could produce.
2024
This year we celebrated our 10-year anniversary with a customer raffle that gifted customers a total of $500 in products. This year also presented us with a few challenges. We had one of our chicken houses flood in the spring due to non-stop torrential rainstorms, the hatchery had a low hatch rate causing a shortage of birds in the fall, and the print company we used lost our postcard order. Our customers were absolutely phenomenal this year extending their patients and understanding to us throughout our challenges. This year also saw our customer base reach 135 families.
Primrose Poultry is located on the outskirts of Fort Plain, NY and is owned and operated by Andrew and Candise Davis. Our property encompasses 21 aces and is surrounded by both other farm lands and state lands which provide us with a beautiful country setting and some amazing sunsets.
We both grew up in the Van Hornesville, NY area and decided to settle down there to raise our own family. We have been married for 20 years and we never had an inkling that this is where life would lead us, but we couldn't be happier. We truly enjoy our "hobby".
